Robert Allison “Bob” Maxwell

 ROCKY MOUNT – Robert Allison "Bob" Maxwell, 72, died December 15, 2011, of cancer, at his home in Rocky Mount, NC.Bob was born on February 10, 1939, in Frederick, MD, to Howard N. and Leona G. Maxwell. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, and later received his masters from Duke University. He married Dorothy Ann Beckerman in 1964 in Seminole, FL; they were divorced in 1978. Robert married Patricia Kathleen Conyers, on June 21, 1980, in Rocky Mount, NC.Bob first came to Rocky Mount in 1965 to be Director of Admissions at North Carolina Wesleyan College. In 1974, he joined the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, first as an administrator and later as a locomotive engineer, a job he would continue to hold until he retired in 2004.Bob was a brother in Phi Delta Theta fraternity, a member of the Kiwanis Club, active the Tar River Astronomy Club (as treasurer and program chairman) and in various model railroad clubs throughout the state. He was also passionate about minor league baseball, photography, computers, recreational vehicles, and the Clan Maxwell Scottish association.Bob is survived by his wife and best friend of 31 years, Patricia Conyers Maxwell, of Rocky Mount; his sons Stuart (Louise) Maxwell, of Seattle, WA and Scott Maxwell of Pasadena, CA; his beloved cats Rocket J. "Rocky" Pussycat and Bullwinkle "Curmudgeon" Pussycat; and by many loving brothers-, sisters-, and parents-in-law, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Lombard, and by his parents.There will be a public gathering to share memories and stories among family and friends on December 20th at Cornerstone Funeral Home, 1052 South 1st Street, Nashville, NC. from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. A private burial will be held at a later date. Those who wish to do so may make memorial donations to either the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at UNC (for bladder cancer research), or to the Salvation Army.The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to all in the community whose small kindnesses, good wishes, and simple gestures have been such a comfort.

So sorry to hear about Bob's passing.  Bob went to work for the railroad a couple of months after I did & I had the pleasure of working with him & sharing a friendship with him for many years.  God bless all of you & may he bring you comfort in your time of sorrow.

bob and i hired out the same year with the railroad and worked together hostling locomotives many days and nights.he was a true friend and always had something cordial to say when we cross paths over the years.GOD bless your family. James Holland

Patricia,  I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Maxwell.  I will miss his zest for life during his clinic visit and his enduring sense of humor.  I thank you so much for allowing me and the rest of the GU group at UNC to care for Mr. Maxwell and for the precious moments (laughs) we shared with the both of you.  Please know that I have you in my thoughts and prayers.
