Norman Edward Mitchell, Sr. Send Condolences
June 21, 2011
Norman Edward Mitchell, Sr.
Norman Edward Mitchell, Sr. “Pops” went to his heavenly reward suddenly, Tuesday, June 21, 2011. He was born April 28, 1932 in Durham County. He was the son of the late O.C. and Nellie Mitchell, Sr. He was preceded in death by his brother O.C. Mitchell, Jr and a sister, Crissie Mitchell Giles. He was a Southern Baptist Minister who has dedicated his ministry to churches in North Carolina, Michigan, and Maryland. He also served as Chaplain for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department and the Fayetteville City Fire Department as well as the founder and Executive Director of the North Carolina Sherriff’s Chaplain’s Association. In recent years, he has served as interim pastor for churches in Nash County and Scotland Neck. He loved the Lord and was very proud to share that with others.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara Nichols Mitchell of Nashville, and four children; Norman E. Mitchell, Jr and his wife Debbie of Memphis, Tn, Kim Mitchell Cowger and husband Paul of Fayetteville, Cindy Mitchell Pike and her husband Bob of Nashville, and Annette Mitchell Ross and her husband Paul of Jacksonville, Fla., three sisters, Ruth M. Woody of Durham, Elsie M. Ennis and husband William of Durham, Vertie M. Perry and husband William of Smithfield. He has 10 grandchildren whom he loved and dedicated so much of his time. He also has special friends that he loved dearly, Donald and Pat Parker.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 3:00pm at the Nashville Baptist Church with the Rev. Jason Gault and Rev. Bert Woodburn officiating. Visitation will follow the celebration at the church. The family will receive friends other times at the home of Bob and Cindy Pike, Nashville, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the North Carolina Sherriff’s Chaplains Association at P.O. Box 53553 Fayetteville, NC 28305 or the charity of choice.
The family would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support that has been received.
Thoughts and prayers to all members of the family during your time of bereavement. Mr. Mitchell was a very special man. I am so thankful that I had the privilege of knowing him during Cindy & Bob's time in Albemarle. "Pops" Mitchell radiated his love for Lord and it was visible to all who crossed his path. Heaven is rejoicing over his homecoming although it has to be bittersweet for the family. I pray that that happy memories will bring comfort and peace until the family is reunited in heaven. Wish I could be there tomorrow to share in the celebration of his life but I am unable to come. However, I will be there in spirit. Love to Barbara, Cindy, Bob, Casey, Bryce, Aaron and all other members of the family.

A great man is paving the way for all of our return to the father.
Our prayers go with you now just like yours did every time we went on the road with CCSO.

Mrs. Mitchell and Family,
My heart was saddened today to learn of the passing of Mr. Mitchell. I will always remember him for all the stories he use to tell from the pulpit about me as a "pretty little blonde headed little girl". The friendship that our families shared will always be remembered.
I know that he is in Heaven with Daddy and Mama catching up.
Please know that all of you are in our thoughts and prayers.
We love you!

Barbara and family, where do you begin, what do you say and how do you say what Uncle Norman meant to us all. To say that he was "special" is an understatement; he was one of a kind!! We all loved him dearly for his uniqueness, his wit, his laughter, his love for us and his Christian values, among numerous other things. He was a FINE Christian man. A few days ago I was visiting Daniel and his family, I guess Edmund or Uncle Norman told you that they are living in Harvey and Crissies house, and we were talking about when Uncle Norman visited there. When Daniel went to his grandparents, as a youngster, and Uncle Norman would visit, they would take walks, go hunting or fishing and just hang out and talk. One time when he came up, he brought Daniel a replica of his log cabin and its sitting on the bookcase in the den. Daniel has treasured this piece of his Uncle Norman for many years and the memories that they shared. I KNOW that you all will miss him greatly and I KNOW that Crissie is trying to make him behavehe was such a fun-loving character.
I wish you blessed memories and a warm heart when Uncle Norman visits your memory. They tend to visit at the most unsuspecting times. Remembrance is a wonderful thing--it keeps us close. God bless you all.

I remember the Mitchell family so fondly from my youth at First Baptist Church in Pocomoke City, Maryland. Reverend Mitchell Baptized me, so that makes him very special to me forever. I feel the pain of your loss, I lost my Mom to cancer in April 2010, but since we know that they both have gone to heaven, they are in a better place, and we will meet them again some day. Love to all of you. Roberta

Barbara and family, We still find it so hard to believe Norman is gone. What a gentle and loving soul he was. All who knew him have wonderful memories of him and know how much he loved and honored the Lord. He was a true mighty warrior for Christ. Although we are grieving for his loss, we know the angels have been rejoicing and celebrating, as Norman entered the Golden Gates to be with our Lord and Savior. Barbara, our thoughts and payers are with you and your loving family. We know God will carry all of you through this time in your lives.

What a beautiful picture of Dr. Mitchell with his eyes on heaven. Dr. Mitchell was a wonderful, spiritual man and will have many stars in his crown when he walks through those pearly gates. He will be missed here, but what a wonderful reunion, when we see him again.
Barbara, God will give you comfort and peace, and your friends and family will help you transition through the years you have left, until the two of you meet again. Please know that you and Norman are loved very much.

Well our family is getting smaller but what a wonderful time we have had over the years. Norman certinally had a lot to do with our lives and he was always the life of the party. I know you all will miss him but we will all see him in the future. I know that Mama, OC and Norman are singing with joy on the streets of gold and he is playing some kind of joke on them.
We love you

To all of the Mitchell family,
As you know "Preacherman" was very dear to our family. He was extra special to me because I walked the aisle and received Christ after one of his awesome sermons. He also baptized me and always encouraged me in the Lord and helped me to be involved in the church. He and Barbara Jean were so good to my mom and dad during mom's long illness. You all are in my thoughts and prayers. We all know he is in heaven which is a great comfort for those of us left behind. Love you all.

I would like to extend my sympathy to Norman's family. He was a big party of my life when I was a young person at the Bethesda Baptist Church in Durham, many, many years ago. I have always had fond memories of him and the influence he had on my life. We were able to keep in touch through the Mitchell family over these many years. God Bless you All.

I just found out doing a genealogy search of Pastor Norman's homegoing.
We met Norman as he
helped us in a church plant in mid
70's in Maryland.
Norman, Jr. also
became our pastor.
Norman was such a
great encouragement
to all he came in
contact with.
I'll never forget a
fishing trip that he
Cliff Doughty & I
went on...we laughed
more than catch fish.
He taught me that
Christian's can be full of joy & can
have full assurance of eternal life thru
Jesus Christ our Lord.
He walked by faith as he trod this earth...but he is now walking by site
as he is with the Lord...forever. Amen.
