Luther W. Matthews, Jr, 73, passed away Monday, January 31, 2022. He was born May 4, 1948 in Nash County to the late Luther Sr and Alcie Manning Matthews. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, John Matthews, Sam Matthews and Mary Coppedge. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 54 years, Judy Sykes Matthews along with sisters JoAnn Johnson, Susie Mae Sanders and sister in law, Ann Matthews as well as many nieces and nephews. He was a proud veteran, drafted in the Army in 1968 serving for 2 years. He also served his community as a Charter Member of the Momeyer Fire Department. He was a lifetime member of Mt Zion Original Free Will Baptist Church where he enjoyed food and fellowship with everyone. He especially enjoyed the Laymen’s League and fellowship committee work that involved cooking and socializing with the church family. He enjoyed his career in food service with Seaboard Foods, Kraft, Alliant, US Foods and Williams Foods. He made many lifelong friends over his more than 35 year career. He had a special relationship with many of his nieces and nephews. He spent much time spoiling them just as if they were his own children, including trips to the beach, White Lake, driving lessons, fishing and coin collecting. He always made time for their activities and participated in anything they suggested for him to do. They all had very special relationships with him. Visitation with family and friends will be Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022 from 10:00-10:45 AM at Cornerstone Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Cornerstone Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mount Zion Original Free Will Baptist Church, 1779 Mount Zion Church Road, Nashville, NC 27856. The family asks that you please wear a mask during visitation.
