Arthur "Wood" Briggs

Arthur Wood Briggs, 81, passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at his home in Nash County. Wood is the son of the late Henry Marriott and Maude Lassiter Briggs, the seventh of 13 children. He was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Briggs Bulluck and Anne Briggs Wrenn; and by his brothers: Lynn, Carl, Rylan, Allen, Bill, Kemp and Joe Briggs. Wood served six months of Active Duty with the National Guard; was then employed by J.P. Stevens Textile in Roanoke Rapids; worked with Randolph Gin in Enfield; employed with the Department of Corrections; the Department of Motor Vehicles in Raleigh; and joined the State Highway Patrol in September of 1968 retiring in September of 1993. Before retiring on February 9, 1993 Wood was shot in the line of duty, during a bank robbery. Wood and Diane owned a roofing business that is now run by their two sons. Wood loved God, his family, and friends faithfully. He was a member of Englewood Baptist Church, served as a deacon while attending Oak Level Baptist Church for four years, and held several positions while attending Corinth Baptist Church. Wood was president of Oak Level Ruritan Club for four years. He loved working on his old car, hunting, fishing, and dancing with his wife, Diane. Wood is survived by his wife Diane Briggs; sons: Phillip Briggs (Kriston) and David Briggs (Tori) of Rocky Mount, and daughter: Rebecca Worrell of Nashville; grandchildren: Whitney Parker (Kendall) of Greenville, Truitt Briggs of Spartanburg, SC, Lindsay Briggs, Landyn Worrell, Dylan Briggs of Rocky Mount; great grandchildren: Emmett and Wesley Parker of Greenville. Visitation will be held at Cornerstone Funeral home in Nashville, NC from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18th. Funeral services will be held at Cornerstone Funeral Home in Nashville, NC at 11 a.m. followed by a graveside service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park on Wednesday, June 19th.
