James "Ken" Crowell Jr.

James Kenneth "Ken" Crowell, Jr., most beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to a multitude of people, passed on to his heavenly home on Monday, March 13, 2017, after a ten-year courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Born in Lenoir, NC, to the late James Kenneth and Estelle King Crowell on November 5, 1938, Ken spent his childhood in Morganton before moving to Wilmington at the age of 16. He graduated from New Hanover High School and continued his education at East Carolina University, where he received a degree in Accounting. On his CPA exam, he scored in the 98th percentile nationwide, and received a letter of commendation from the Lt. Governor of North Carolina. His CPA career took him to several cities, but he settled in Rocky Mount, where he met the love of his life, Martha. He then opened Crowell and Associates Real Estate Firm where he specialized in land and housing developments. He belonged to many civic organizations and was Vice-President of the North Carolina Jaycees. Ken's family was of utmost importance to him: His wife of 35 years, Martha Pitt Crowell, two sons, James K. Crowell,III (Kim), Michael Keith Crowell (Sarah), one stepson, W. Austin Jackson, Jr. (Sarah), his grandchildren, Conner and Gavin Crowell, and Gray Jackson. He has one remaining sister, Rebecca Crowell Chason (Henry), and a brother, Charles Edward Crowell (Susan). Predeceasing him were his parents, and siblings Shirley Jean, Donald Edwin, and John Douglas Crowell. Ken was a kind, compassionate, loving and gentle soul, who was quick to perform anonymous acts of kindness and generosity. Everyone who knew and loved him will cherish their memories of this awesome and wonderful man. The family wishes to thank Letisha Richardson and Dr. Doug Boyette of Nash Hospice, and the staff of Spring Arbor for their loving care of him -- and most especially to his favorite caregivers Susie Bell and Estelle Alston. We will always remember your kind and gentle ways, and will love you forever. Visitation will be Friday, March 17, 2017 from 1:00-2:00 PM at Nashville, Baptist Church. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 PM with Rev. Kenneth Byrd and Rev. Phillip Barton officiating.
