Myrtle Moss Manning

Myrtle Moss Manning, age 85, of Rocky Mount, won her battle against Alzheimer’s Disease and joined her heavenly father on April 23. She left this life surrounded by the love of her four children Elaine, Linda Anna, Cathy and Buddy (Earl Jr II), seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and her friends/staff members of The Fountains at the Albemarle in Tarboro, NC. She was born in Nash County on February 17, 1935 alongside her much beloved fraternal twin sister, Mildred to Mattie Lee Moss and Leslie Moss. She had two older brothers, Clifton and David, along with two half-brothers, Elmo and Wilbur, and two half-sisters, Jessie and Becky, whom she loved dearly. Although twins and not identical, the two sisters were life long buddies. Affectionately known as “Mulo” to her sister’s family, Myrtle was the tomboy and Mildred her feminine ideal. She married her sweetheart, Earl, at 17 years old after meeting him at a community dance in Spring Hope, NC in 1951, and they were married for 64 wonderful years. A proud and ferocious worker, she retired after more than 25 years as a weaver at Burlington Industries in Rocky Mount. Over the years, she enjoyed gardening, her multiple dogs, coaching little league baseball, bluegrass music, family cookouts, trips to the Blue Ridge Mountains, and working which was her great love and pastime. She fervently believed that hard work was the key to unlock opportunities and she instilled that in each of her children. If she loved you, you knew it. She would give you the shirt off her back, always caring for those she loved. She had high expectations and was determined to always survive life’s toil and snares. If she was in your corner, you didn’t need another. If you met her, you would not ever forget her. If you visited her, she was going to feed you and when you left she was going to walk you all the way down her driveway until she had to let you go. Like her favorite color red, she was bold, blunt, true and steadfast, her words always braced her actions and while not as good in the kitchen as her devoted Earl she made the best butter “Lima” beans of anyone. While never having much of anything gifted to her, she had a secret ability to win almost any drawing she entered and was most proud of a new corvair automobile that she won at the Rocky Mount fair in 1966. In the end, she fought dementia and her battle with Alzheimer’s with steel like bravery and although changed because of her illness, her love, her hugs and her resolve to survive never wilted. She finally had victory and is sleeping in heavenly peace with her Lord and her heavenly family/friends. Visitation Sunday, April 26, 2020 from 12:00 – 2:00 P.M. at Cornerstone Funeral Home with a funeral service at 2:00 P.M. Burial will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery following the service. The family will be receiving friends other times at 6198 US 258 N. Tarboro, NC. Cabin Branch Rd., First Driveway to the left.
