Helen Christine Hayes

Christine Shearin Hayes, 91, of Spring Hope, died October 24, 2018 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Christine was born and raised in Nash County and lived there all of her life. She was the daughter of Jimmy and Edna Shearin of Momeyer, NC. She was part of a large, hard working farming family and her strong work ethic continued until her death. If it needed to be done, then she found a way to do it: digging water lines, cutting trees, gardening, making clothes, upholstering chairs and much more. She worked for many years at Devil Dog Manufacturing Company. She was happy to admit that making production was not as important as making certain that the job was done right. She was a loving wife and mother who took great care of her family. She spent her life graciously giving to others. She was loved by all, even those who only met her for a brief amount of time. She was happiest at her foot pedal sewing machine creating beautiful quilt tops, hand quilting those quilts, and in her garden growing delicious vegetables and sharing them with her friends and family. Christine was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Clyde Stanton Hayes. Also preceding her in death were three sisters, Mary Davis, Lula Sykes, and Ruth Coppedge; as well as four brothers: Raymond, Joe, Buck, and Horace Shearin. She leaves behind to honor her memory five children: Duke Hayes, Helen Baines (husband, Shawne Baines), Pam Pace (husband, Kenneth Pace), Roxie Hayes (husband, Keith Joyner) and Scott Hayes; three grandchildren, Michelle Pleasants, Heather Pleasants and Zachary Pace (wife, Crystal Pace), two great-grandchildren, Savannah Pleasants and Matthew Pleasants, and one great-great-grandchild, Stori Ronzitti. She also leaves behind one surviving sister, Carrie Young. Visitation with the family will be held at 1:30 pm on Sunday, November 4 at Holly Grove Baptist Church, 1640 Holly Road, Spring Hope, NC and will be followed by a celebration of life service at 2:30 pm. The family would like to fill the church with the beauty of quilts. If you have a quilt made by Christine, please bring it to display during the service so that we can surround ourselves with what she loved the most. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Holly Grove Baptist Church.
