Leslie D. Small

Leslie D. Small, Jr., 87, passed away on October 20, 2023, born in Lisbon Falls, ME on June 28, 1936. He was the son of Leslie Small, Sr. and Helen Dalrymple Small. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Curtis; Daughter-in-law, Janet Small; First wife Lula Mae Small, and his beloved basset hound companion, Shelton. Les leaves behind to cherish his memories, his loving wife, Pamela Small; his sons and their spouses, Allan and Charlene, Ricky, Steve and Lynn, Neil, Jason and Delia; his canine companion basset hound, Ellie Mae; grandchildren, Kara, Stacie, Brooke, Callista, And Neil, Jr.; two great-granddaughters, Krystena and Melissa; great-grandson, Charlie. He joined the Air Force shortly after graduating in September of 1954 and retired in 1975. He felt proud to serve his country. Most of his active duty was spent on foreign soil, with assignments in Italy, Turkey, Korea, Panama Canal Zone, France, and England. It was while stationed in England that Les and his family were featured on the cover of Parade Magazine on why France kicked US forces out. Les had a colorful career after the Air Force. He went to college to get a teaching career in Health and P/E, but was offered a position as plant manager of one of the largest seafood processing plants on the east coast. The company was sold and although he still had his job with the new owners, he elected to a new job offer as a department manager with Standard Products in North Carolina. He always had a desire to be in the auto sales business and he left Standard Products. He went to work with Rod Holloman, and helped him open a very successful business, Rocky Mount Motors. He always thought of Rod as another son, praising him one day and standing in the corner the next. He loved fast pitch softball, and was well known in fast pitch circles in the mid-west. He played for national contenders in 1972 was named MVP of the Air Forces AFLC Tournament at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. A visitation with family and friends will be Wednesday, October 25, 2023 from 10:00-10:45am at Cornerstone Funeral Home with a memorial service to follow at 11:00am in the Chapel. A private burial will be held at a later date at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Vets. Cemetery in Suffolk, VA.
