Ronald "Scott" Braswell Jr.

Ronald Scott Braswell, Jr. went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 15, 2024 at Duke University Hospital. A lifelong native of Nash County, NC, Scott was born on June 2, 1956. He was the son of the late Ronald and Peggy Braswell of Nashville. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Mary Lou Parker Braswell; his daughter, Mary Scott Anderson, her husband Doug, and their two children, Matthew Allen and Jackson Scott; his son Trey, his wife Wimberly, and their three children, Ellie Grace, Gardner Mae, and Barnabas Oak; his sister Jan Braswell Werner, her husband Keith; his sister-n-law Jackie Collie, her husband Mike; his sister-n-law Flonnie Buck, her husband David; many nieces and nephews; and an extensive family at Braswell Family Farms. He dearly loved his two children. You would frequently hear Mary Scott say he was the “best daddy” ever. He cherished his role as Papa to his 5 grandchildren. They were the highlight of his life…the icing on the cake. Scott and Mary Lou had many wonderful years together. They shared so many special moments at the beach and at the mountains. The last 3-1/2 years with his new heart, Scott especially cherished his time on the water in Morehead City with Mary Lou and their bond was unbroken. They welcomed friends and family near and far to celebrate in his renewal of life. Even though his health limited him physically, he would give anything he had to anyone in need. As a child of God, generosity was his greatest spiritual gift. He had a special heart for Samaritan’s Purse and Appalachia Service Project (ASP), his church, and the employees and families of Braswell Family Farms, along with many others. Scott graduated from Rocky Mount Academy in 1975. He loved playing football, being with his friends, and doing all of the special projects that he possibly could for the school. He was a faithful member of Nashville Methodist Church his entire life. He was christened as an infant but chose to get baptized in the Jordan River while on a trip to the Holy Land in 2017. Scott had a passion for flying and earned his pilot’s license when he was eighteen. Scott was involved in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He cherished his many leaders that took so much of their time to work with the boys. His greatest memory was hiking with the Scouts at Philmont in New Mexico. That was the trip he left as a boy and came home as a man. Scott got his certification for Basic Law Enforcement when he was twenty. He worked his early years on weekends for the Nashville Police Department and volunteered for the Nashville Fire Department for many years. He was a successful entrepreneur. He had an electronics business at age 16 called Braswell Electronics. He sold CB radios and other electronics out of a corner in the office at Braswell Milling Company. He also worked for Jordan’s Exxon while in high school. Scott enjoyed working in the family business from the time he could walk, whether it was bagging cornmeal with his grandfather at Boddie’s Mill or putting the baby chicks to bed in the chicken houses. When Scott was 35, his dad passed and he took over leadership of the company in 1991 and grew into a well respected leader in the industry and the community. He was a calculated risk taker and grew Braswell Family Farms over the next two decades into one of the most respected specialty egg and feed companies in the country. During his time at the helm of Braswell Family Farms he served on the board of the United Egg Producers, the American Egg Board, and the North Carolina Egg Association. Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday, October 26, 2024 from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm at Nashville Methodist Church and other times at home. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 pm with Rev. Scott Dodson and Rev. Luke Whitehead officiating.
