James Tillman Vaughn

James Tillman (Jim) Vaughn, of Louisburg, NC, died peacefully at his home on May 27, 2024, after an extended battle with T-Cell Lymphoma. Born on May 30, 1951 in Talladega, AL, Jim lived the bulk of his youth in rural South Alabama with his large extended family. His early days were marked by the country life, watermelon on the porch, strong Christian values, and a deep allegiance to the Baptist church that was founded by his grandparents. Jim made a profession of faith in Christ at an early age, and spent his life living out those values as an obedient son, loving husband, devoted father, good friend to many, and a honorable citizen who loved and served his country. In the end, he stated that he wants to be remembered as a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. He graduated from Samford University in 1973, just as mainframe computers became "must have" business necessities, and was hired for his first full time job before he even finished college. He worked the rest of his life in the field of computer science. Jim met the love of his life, the former Cathy Gates, of Prospect Hill, NC and they were married on July 6,1991. After working with an international adoption agency and traveling to Russia twice, they adopted their two sons, Christopher and Louie, in 2001. He served for 22 years in the Naval Reserve/Marine Corp, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. His work in the Reserves focused on cryptology/intelligence, and he was attached to the NATO Alliance based in Ft. Meade, MD. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, James Howard Vaughn and Mary Esther Tillman Vaughn; and an older brother, Louie D. Grimes. He is survived by his wife Cathy Gates Vaughn and their two sons, Christopher and Louie; brother Judson Vaughn and his wife Margaret "Peggy", of Herndon, VA, and their three children; Martha "Pug" Grimes, widow of Louie Grimes of Dothan, AL, and their two sons; brother-in-law Garry Gates and his wife Kathy of Elon, NC and their four children, and sister-in-law Deborah Gates; and a host of extended relatives. A celebration of his life by the people who knew and loved him will be at Holly Grove Baptist Church, 1640 Holly Rd, Spring Hope, NC 27882 on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 1:30 pm.
