Jeanette Shaw

Born 1-14-1934 in Elizabeth City, NC to the late Agnes Mae and Lewis Noble Tucker; step-father- Alphonso White. She is also preceded in death by her husband of 52 years Joseph Paul Shaw Jr., maternal Grandmother Nancy Ann Hurdle, and Grandfather John Wesley Hurdle; paternal Grandmother Hattie Tucker and Grandfather George Tucker. She is survived by her son Jon Kevin Shaw and wife Teresa; daughter Laurie Shaw Olson and husband Douglas; four grandchildren, Kelly Shaw Sorie and husband Blake and Robert Shaw Flaherty, Ryan and Madison Olson; great-grandson Samuel Sorie and great granddaughter Hallie Sorie; one sister and brother-in-law- Rita and David Gregory, one sister-in-law- Mary Jo Harrison and husband Tom Harrison; three nieces Bridget Johnson, Susan Pardue and Penny Pardue and five nephews, Robert and Brant Cartwright, Dan Harrison, Joe, and Bob. She attended schools in Elizabeth City where she began her piano study and membership in the Elizabeth City High Schools. While in Petersburg she enjoyed playing percussion in the Richmond Symphony. While teaching music in the Pasquotank Elementary Schools she began teaching private piano which continued for many years. In Nashville she was employed by the Nash County Schools as an elementary music teacher in the Red Oak, Benvenue, and Hubbard Schools. After spending some time with her young children at home and continuing to teach private piano, she was employed by Edgecombe County as a Social Worker. As much as her first love was music, she felt this work was important in shaping her adult life. It was with a gusto and dedicating that she worked in the many areas of social work there and in the Nash County Social Services. For 17 years she directed the Adult Choir at Nashville Methodist Church and previously she played organ and piano for the services for 16 years. Her church affiliation was never taken for granted as she took part in all of the programs throughout her years. She served on committees in Sunday School, and faithfully attended Sunday School, taught 6th grade and the Woman’s Bible Class after retiring from directing the adult and Jr. choirs. After retiring from Nash County Social Services she began taking an active part with the Senior Group, “Special People” in her church, planning meetings and trips for many years. In 2005 she was awarded the “Distinguished Citizen of Nash County” because of her many hours of volunteering with her musical talents at Rest Homes, the NASH, social events, and church. Believing that she should do more, she joined the Nashville Lions Club and was instrumental in starting a second Lions Club in Nashville. Eventually the two Lions Clubs became one and she continued to be an active member. Her family has been a source of pride and love and will long remember the love she showed them and of her desire for them to have a close relationship with her God. A visitation will be held at 10:00am on Thursday, May 8, 2025 at Nashville Methodist Church with a celebration of life following at 11:00am.
